The Value of Website Reviews’

Some kinds are meant to help you, the webmaster, improve the accessibility of your site. Other evaluations test the usability. Very often these are advertised services by the ‘professionals’ who, usually for a fee, will check out your site, and perhaps even offer to make changes to further improve how your site appears to the search engines, and potential users.

Not everyone, however, is willing or able to pay fees to have their sites appraised. And, unless you run a big business, having the ‘perfect site’ if ever there is such a thing, is not going to make or break you.

That does not mean though that anything will do, because it is a fact of cyberlife that unless your site meets a certain level of criteria, you could find no one ever gets to see your site, much less spends any time on it.

This is where getting others to review your site comes in. There are lots of forums that have a section where your site can be reviewed. Sometimes reviews are carried out by other members, sometimes by trained staff. Very often the types of money sites they review are similar in subject to the forum itself. For example, if you have your own MyBB forum, then you might find that a forum discussing the MyBB forum script has a folder for reviews of other discussion forums which use the same script.

Never underestimate the value of having other members give you feedback on your website. Many users are experienced at website design. They know what looks ‘right’ and can offer some good advice. Even those who have little knowledge of creating sites are at least users, and as such they are members of the public who know what they like, and what they do not. They will soon tell you if they do not like the color, or the graphics, or they can not navigate too easily.

Once you have got some feedback, consider whether the comments have any merit. If they do then make any changes, then go back and ask for further critique. You will never please all of the people all of the time, but if you can make the majority happy you have got a good chance of succeeding.
